Letter from Joe and 15 new positions
Hello everyone. I'm sorry for the delay in writing this e-mail, but there have been rumors going around, and an e-mail by a faculty member last week misstated both the facts of the restructuring, and the SSA contract language. Given that neither faculty member was present at either meeting where this was discussed, and have no knowledge of our contract, it is easy to understand their confusion.Regarding the restructuring, I understand there has been a lot of fear by those people in the current positions affected by the restructuring. I hope this e-mail eliminates some of the confusion, and helps to alleviate at least some of the angst felt by those directly involved. The SSA has been working with Administration to try and make this transition as painless as possible.First, no member is being forced to reapply for positions they are already in. There has been a restructuring within Academic Affairs. This restructuring is resulting in the creation of six new positions titled "Assistant to the Associate Dean". These new positions will be compensated at a rate 3% higher than the current Division Secretaries. Because these are brand new positions with a different compensation rate, it is REQUIRED that they go out to bid.In addition, three part time Departmental Secretary jobs will become six full time Academic Affairs Assistant positions. These will be compensated at the Department Secretary rate. There are currently ten Division Secretaries in the existing structure, and three Department Secretaries. With Carol D'Avanzo's recent retirement, there are twelve active members in the thirteen current positions.Today, fourteen new positions will be posted, the six new Assistant to the Associate Dean positions, the six Academic Affairs Assistant positions, in addition to two new positions in the Welcome Center. In regards to the Academic Affairs restructuring, all current secretaries will be held harmless, meaning, should a current Division Secretary be placed in the Academic Affairs Assistant position, they will keep their current compensation level. This was just announced yesterday. In addition, prior work experience will be considered in lieu of Associate Degree and testing requirements during the restructuring. The college is in a severe financial crisis. The results of the restructuring will save the college over 700,000 dollars a year. Any discussions that this restructuring was done in an attempt to benefit or penalize any specific member or members are without any merit or basis in fact. The truth is, every effort has been made by Administration, including Human Resources and members of cabinet, to make accommodations for SSA members.Anyone interested in these jobs should have an updated resume, in addition to current data within PeopleAdmin. You must apply for each position you are interested in.If there are any question, please let me know, and I will try and get relevant data as quickly as possible.Joe
